Lot description:

CARIA. Cos. Pseudo-autonomous (3rd century). Ae.

Obv: O ΔAMOΣ.
Bare head of Demos right.
Rev: KΩΙΩΝ.
Herakles standing facing, head right, with hand on hip and holding infant Telephos; crab to lower right.

BMC 209; Weber 6661-2; CNG E-181, lot 142 corr. (obv. listed as 'Adanus,' Herakles with club instead of infant) = Asia Minor Coins online #4799.

In addition to the unusual use of the definite article on the obverse, this type also features the Doric 'δαμος' rather than the more frequently encountered 'δημος.' This is paralleled in another autonomous issue from Cos, featuring 'α βουλα' and Herakles seated on rocks (BMC 210-1; Weber 6663). Highly interesting and rare.

Condition: Near very fine.

Weight: 5.25 g.
Diameter: 24 mm.

Estimate: 50 EUR
